Most of you may know that I like to cook and more importantly, like to eat! Going to the market is something that I miss from living in Paris. I was able to walk to a covered market near our apartment there, so I was excited to check out the South Melbourne Market. Unfortunately, it’s not walking distance though.
South Melbourne Market opened in 1867, and it’s still packed today with shoppers. It has about everything you could want… fruits, veggies, butchers, seafood, cheese, coffee, fresh pasta, beer, wine… you get the picture.
My father-in-law asked us if there was anything different here to eat, and I couldn’t really think of anything at the time, but we found a few items at the market.
No, we did not get either. Yes, I am a tourist taking pictures, but I tried to do it discreetly. I usually like to try new foods, but I don’t have an interest in trying kangaroo. It’s described as being gamey, which isn’t appealing to me. Maybe I’ll try it when my brother comes who loves venison. I’ve heard it described as a cross between beef and venison.
The kids managed to get themselves some cookies out of the visit, so they were happy. Or was it bribery to keep them in the stroller for longer…
We also managed to come home with some nice items from the butcher, fresh pasta and seafood. How else should you start your stint in Australia, but with having “shrimp on the barbie”?! {Which doesn’t make much sense because they call them “prawns”…}
