It’s been a much anticipated birthday for Isla. A bit naive I suppose, but I didn’t realize that we could hear so much about one’s birthday. It started in April when Greyson had his birthday, and that’s when she came to realize the whole celebration/gift thing. Since then, she’s been asking for her birthday. I told her (mistakenly in hindsight) that it wouldn’t be until we were at the “new house”. Once we arrived in May, it was my birthday, and that didn’t work out too well for her because she was supposed to have her birthday! Then for the next couple of months, she kept asking when it would be her birthday. I said it wasn’t until after daddy’s (in August), and then she wanted to trade birthdays with him. So, now, it has finally arrived! But, I’m not sure how I’m going to combat this question for the next year….
The birthday celebration started with a small cupcake party in her classroom. Below is the write up that the teacher did for their weekly learning journal. Each student gets to wear “the birthday hat” for their celebration. Greyson could hardly contain himself sitting next to the cupcakes while they sang Happy Birthday. He finally ended up poking one, so I left him take it to hold. He just stared at it with a smile until I said he could eat it.
Isla was thrilled to give her friends cupcakes that she helped decorate. The one little girl cried because she got a topper that had a balloon on it–she is scared of balloons. That was the only traumatic part thankfully!
The other thing that Isla has figured out about birthdays is that they often come with parties! She’s now on the 4 year old birthday party circuit. So, in addition to negotiating when her birthday would be, she’s also informed me numerous times what she wanted her party to be like. Although, each time, the description changed! And, for a few months now, if she gets mad at me, she would also inform me that I wasn’t invited to her birthday party. And, I would let her know that I was indeed coming because I was the host! {How long will this go on?!}
We had a birthday party. We had it at the Kids Fancy Dress Party Place, and two fairy princesses played games with the children and helped them dress up in costumes. Isla kept talking about being Rapunzel, but didn’t make it past the Elsa costume and wig. So, here she is…
Above are some of Isla’s closest friends, Scarlett and Frankie. They like all things sparkly and pink so it’s a match made in heaven.
It took some of the children a bit of time to warm up, but by the end, they all had a blast. She has such a great group of kids in her class.
They enjoyed their morning tea together, sharing some Australian favorites such as Vegemite sandwiches and Fairy bread. It makes me laugh because I asked the lady if I could bring in my own food because I wasn’t so sure I wanted to have Vegemite sandwiches. She said, “Is this for American or Australian children?” When I said Australian, I reluctantly agreed to them. And the first birthday I attended that had Fairy bread, I had to ask what it was and I was told “Oh, you have to have it every birthday party!” In case you are wondering… it’s white bread with butter and sprinkles on the top. Greyson devoured it. The parents were laughing as Brent and I were trying it for the first time.
And of course, there was cake.
I wish she didn’t have the face paint, Elsa eye shadow on for this picture, but I guess that’s a costume party for you!
She had a wonderful time. And, it’s not even her birthday yet! … I’m posting early because we have an early flight out tomorrow morning on her actual birthday. More celebration pictures to come with the ones from vacation…

I could not love this more! I wish Olive could have been there to celebrate with Isla, she would have loved this party!! Isla looks so adorable and happy, being 4 seems pretty great to me.
I had a good laugh reading about her birthday anticipation because we basically had the EXACT same circumstances since Jasper’ birthday and my birthday are so close to Greyson’s and yours. Olive is already planning her 5th birthday…it’s going to be a long year I think!!
