Last week was Brent’s birthday. The last one of his 30s!
Even though he wanted lobster for his birthday dinner, and I couldn’t find it (since it’s not in season)…. and made a sausage roll instead (Australian favorite, but not sure why), I think it turned out pretty nice.
Isla made a picture for him. She wrapped it and secured it in so much tape that I’m not sure how he got it open. She also picked a card that you could wear the mustache cutouts. We had fun with that.
It just so happened that it was also Father’s Day (Australia’s date) last weekend, so we got to celebrate both in one week. Unfortunately we didn’t realize that Isla’s school celebration would be so nice, and we didn’t get Brent’s work calendar blocked so the meetings piled on. Sadly, he missed the school celebration. She was still so proud to give him his gifts that she made and purchased at the school store. She even kept a secret as to what they were and said we had to wait until after dinner to open them. {I was dying to see what was in them!} Here, she stuck to the mustache theme and purchased “Dad’s stache”, a jar filled with gum balls. Her teachers also had them draw a portrait of their daddy, and then made them into playing cards. Really cute idea. Lastly, she wrote this little story about her daddy…. I have to say that most of it is pretty accurate!
We aren’t big into exchanging gifts and prefer our experiences, so we took the weekend and traveled to Yarra Valley. It is a wine region that’s only about an hour outside of the Melbourne. I served as the designated driver, and Brent sampled his way through wineries and breweries. I have to say that our wine tasting tours have changed a little since the kids came along, so we stopped for ice cream at the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery, checked out nature and made a few visits to the playground.
But, don’t get me wrong, they are also learning the etiquette… 🙂
